Bosch and BillerudKorsnäs offer sustainable alternative for plastic packaging

According to a study of the German Packaging Institute on consumer attitudes towards sustainability, protection of the environment and packaging, the majority of people pay attention to reducing or even avoiding waste.* At the same time the study shows that many consumers prefer packaged goods since packaging keeps the food fresh and clean and is more convenient. Bosch and BillerudKorsnäs meet those consumer requirements with their latest innovation: fully recyclable sealed paper packaging.

 

Until now, the production of mono-material paper packaging was only possible with glued pre-made bags or formed paper bags on mandrel wheel technology. The VFFS concept, which is more flexible regarding formats and pack styles and thus popular on the market, previously only allowed bag production using polymer film or fully coated paper. With the ZAP-Module from Bosch it is now possible to process mono-material paper on VFFS technology with dust-tight sealing.

 

The secret is in the characteristics of the Axello®ZAP paper from BillerudKorsnäs, which was specially developed for this application, as well as in the ZAP-Module from Bosch Packaging Technology. The combination of the two components resulted in the world’s first solution for dust-tight packaging of dry foods like sugar, pasta products or flour.

 

As first customer of the sustainable packaging format the family business Pfeifer & Langen, producer of the sugar brand Diamant, was acquired. “The solution offered us two main benefits – improved customer experience from using a natural packaging material and enhanced efficiency of our production line”, says Ulrich Jansen, marketing director at Pfeifer & Langen.
